The Charles City Whitewater Challenge returns to the Cedar River riverfront this weekend, bringing three days of whitewater competition, free surf and boogie board clinics, family activities, food vendors, and opportunities for all ages to get involved. During a Community Conversation on KCHA, organizers Ginger Williams, Phoebe Pittman and Rob Pittman discussed how beginners can try river surfing for free, highlighted unique events like the Hooligan Open and Balls to the Wall competition, and shared details on activities for spectators including scavenger hunts, kids games and a free kayak giveaway. They also emphasized that no prior experience is needed for the clinics and encouraged anyone curious about the sport to come down and give it a try.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
