Floyd County Sheriff’s Office Hosts Fair Grill Out, K9 Meet-and-Greet Wednesday (07.15)

Last month, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) doubled its K9 force, with the hiring of Deputy Blake Welper and his K9 Emmylou.

Welper had been a Cresco Police Officer the past 4.5 years and partnered with Emmylou, a silver Lab, for the last 1.5 years. They join the K9 unit of Deputy Luke Chatfield and Sirius, a male Shepard and Malinois.

FCSO Lieutenant Travis Bartz says it all enhances their law enforcement capabilities across the county.

While having two K9s isn’t the norm, its more common than you think.

Among counties with two K9 is Chickasaw County, one with the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office and one with the New Hampton Police.

Having two K9s also means more fundraising to cover costs of food, vet care, equipment and once-a-month training. Thus, FCSO hosts their annual grillout at the Floyd County Fair Wednesday (07.15), starting at 5:30 PM, with a meal of a hamburger, hot dog, or brat, plus chips and a drink.

Bartz adds that a K9 can go a long way to stopping would-be offenders.
