New World Screwworm Update

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller says officials are closely monitoring the spread of New World screwworm. Miller says Texas is working with Mexico and other partners to strengthen prevention efforts as officials watch for any signs the pest could move farther north.

Miller says one of the biggest concerns is how easily the pest can travel across borders, including through wildlife and other pathways. He says the state is expanding its monitoring efforts, including placing traps in areas where the flies could potentially enter Texas.

Even though no known cases have been reported in Iowa, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship issued guidance and best practices to protect animals and livestock from New World Screwworm. If you would like to access these resources you can click the link here.
