Charles City School District PPEL Up for Renewal Next Month

September 8th has been set as the special election day for voters in the Charles City School District to decide whether to renew the PPEL levy rate.

Superintendent Brian Burnight told the School Board Monday (08.10) night that the PPEL provides the district vital operational funding.

Burnight says the current voter-approved PPEL runs through 2030, with next month’s vote to renew the PPEL through 2040.

The PPEL requires a simple majority YES vote for passage.

Absentee ballots are available through August 24th.

Voters in the Osage School District will also decide on a PPEL levy rate on September 8th, when polls will be open from 7 am to 8 pm.

A special election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 8, regarding the renewal of the Charles City Community School District’s Physical Plant & Equipment Levy (PPEL).

The current levy expires in 2030. Voter approval of this measure would extend the existing levy through 2040. Renewal of the levy in this election will allow funding to continue at the same level for the next 14 years. Because this measure is a renewal of an existing levy, passing it will not increase property tax rates.

By state law, PPEL funds are restricted to specific infrastructure and hardware expenditures. Eligible uses include school bus maintenance and replacement, building security upgrades, and general facility upkeep.

Past PPEL projects for the Charles City Community School District include school security door readers to keep building entrances secure, school bus and vehicle repair and replacement, replaced sewer lines at the High School, fire alarm replacement, and numerous others that allow the district to offer safe and positive learning environments.
