Gravel Done, Second Round Mowing Ahead of Schedule for Rural Floyd County Roads

Keeping track of various road and bridge projects garners a lot of attention for the Floyd County Secondary Roads department.

But there’s also plenty of regular maintenance that must be addressed, such as distributing rock on the County’s gravel roads.

That’s Floyd County Engineer Adam Miller, who says crews are also making good headway on mowing the shoulders of those gravel roads a second time.

Improving that efficiency is key when Millar notes that Floyd County has over 900 miles of secondary roads, but that mileage of mowing doubles to 1,800 miles since each road has two shoulders to mow.

Meanwhile, Miller says Glass Avenue, between 227th and 230th Street, will remain closed for another one-to-two months. That’s as the wait for new culverts to be built to replace the wooden box culvert that collapsed under the weight of a maintenance grader on August 17th. 

Miller said the culvert, southeast of Rockford, failed due to age. The grader operator was not hurt.
