September is National Chicken Month

Fun fact of the day or I guess, month: September is National Chicken Month. Here are a few things that maybe you didn’t know about chicken.

The National Chicken Council established the observance to boost poultry sales as summer grilling slows down, turning September into one of the year’s best-performing retail periods and it must work because Americans eat nearly 99 pounds of chicken per person every year.

Chickens can remember and recognize over 100 different faces, including other chickens and humans. Chickens have better color vision than humans and can see ultraviolet light. Chickens have over 30 unique vocalizations that they use to communicate a wide variety of messages to other chickens, including mating calls, stress signals, warnings of danger, how they are feeling, and food discovery. Hen’s ears tell you what colour eggs they lay. It depends on the breed of the hen, but it’s not the colour of the feathers that tells you what colour the egg shell will be. It’s the colour of the hen’s earlobes!
