Cyclospora Still Prevalent Despite Increased Awareness

As of last Friday (Aug. 28), more than 11,000 people have fallen ill across 20 states, resulting in nearly 500 hospitalizations and two deaths, in association with the cyclosporiasis outbreak.

Chickasaw County Public Health Administrator Lisa Welter says Iowa is among those 20 states dealing with cyclospora.

Ironically, the watery diarrhea of cyclosporiasis can lead to severe dehydration.

Welter adds that there are precautions you can take to cut down on your chances of experiencing cyclosporiasis.

The nation’s largest-ever cyclosporiasis outbreak has been linked to iceberg lettuce grown and distributed by Taylor Farms/Taylor Fresh Foods.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded more than 17,000 laboratory-confirmed cases since May 1st. By comparison, the CDC recorded just 1,200 Cyclospora infections between May and August of 2025.
