Floyd Co. Medical Center Breaks Ground for Phase II of Hospital Expansion

In July, Floyd County Medical Center held a ribbon cutting for its $40 million expansion of the hospital that includes a new three-story rural health clinic.
Thursday (Oct. 1), FCMC held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of Phase II of construction that will include five new operating rooms, a new cafeteria and kitchen, and new materials management department.
CEO Dawnett Willis said the project wouldn’t be possible without the Board of Trustees, hospital staff, local banks for financing, engineers and contractors, plus the Charles City community.
General Surgeon Dr. Angela Van Gilder said she was ecstatic that the surgery department will have the space and the equipment they need, something she wasn’t accustomed to at her previous hospital.
Van Gilder also broke the news of new equipment coming to FCMC.
According to the National Library of Medicine, a da Vinci surgical-assist robot has a price tag between $1 million and $2.5 million.
Estimated completion date of Phase II construction spans the end of 2028 to the beginning of 2029. Phase III, for the Stille Cancer Center, will begin construction next year and will have its own groundbreaking celebration.
In addition to a USDA loan of $27.5 million, FCMC will finance $8 million through local commercial lending and contribute $4 million in equity towards the total cost of the Phase II project, estimated at $40.5 million.
