Family Farms Account For 97 Percent Of U.S. Farms

Family-owned operations continue to power American agriculture, representing 97% of all U.S. farms, 91% of agricultural land, and 85% of total production value, according to USDA data.
Small family farms—earning under $350,000 annually—make up 86% of all operations, managing 40% of farm land while contributing 17% of production value. Midsize family farms account for another 6% of operations and 18% of both land and output. Meanwhile, large-scale family farms generating $1 million or more represent just 5% of farms, yet manage a third of the land and produce half of the nation’s total output value. Non-family farms account for the remaining 3% of farms and 14% of production value, down slightly from 2023.
