Fire Prevention Week 2026 Focus on Safe Charging

October 4th through the 10th is Fire Prevention Week, the kickoff to October Fire Prevention Month.
Charles City Fire Chief Sam Deverell says this year’s theme, “Charge into Safety — Safe Charging is a Super Power,” stresses a variety of points from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.
Other NFPA safety points include unplugging your device once fully charged; charge tools and rides like E-bikes and scooters outside; stop using your device if it feels hot; and when on a plane, keep your device within sight while it’s charging. NFPA also cautions against charging e-cigarettes and vapes on airplanes.
The Charles City Fire Department will wrap up Fire Prevention Week this Sunday (Oct. 11) with its annual free will donation Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 11 AM at the fire station.
