Public Hearing Set for New Hampton Residents’ Feedback on E-Scooter/E-Bike Ordinance

After two meetings of the City’s newly formed Safety Committee and debating the issue in the past two Council meetings, New Hampton residents will have an opportunity to weigh in directly with City leaders on the growing problem of unsafe operation of electric bikes and electric scooters in City limits.
The increasing popularity of E-scooters and E-bikes has also increased the opportunity for accidents for riders, but also motorists and pedestrians. Police Chief Conrad Rosendahl says New Hampton is one of multiple cities across Iowa struggling with how to curb potential mishaps resulting in injury or worse.
Over the past month, City officials have ramped up their discussion on how to improve the safety for pedestrians, individuals using mobility devices, and all users of public sidewalks and streets. Rosendahl has been lobbying for an updated or new ordinance so that the City can at least show they’re making attempts to deal with the issue before a serious accident occurs.
Last week, the City Council voted 5-1 to set a public hearing as part of their next regular meeting at 7 PM on July 20th. The notice of the public hearing says input will be accepted regarding the amending of the City Code of New Hampton, specifically adding Chapter 77 Personal Transportation Devices (electric scooters, electric bikes, and other mobility devices.)
Anyone interested may appear at the public hearing and be heard. Written comments can also be filed in person or mailed to the City Clerk, at 112 East Spring Street, New Hampton, Iowa, 50659. Written comments must be received in the City Clerk’s office before 4:30 PM on July 20th.
