Charles City Fire Crews Respond to Two Structure Fires in Seven Hours

There were no injuries reported after the Charles City Fire Department responded to two fire calls about seven hours apart on Wednesday (08.27).
Just before 4:30 PM, fire crews were dispatched to the 1700 block of Clark Street, where heavy smoke was coming from the second floor of a two-story, unattached single-family residence. Upon arrival, firefighters began working to control the fire and secure the scene.
Mutual aid was provided by the Floyd and Colwell fire departments, with close to 20 firefighters battling the blaze until around 5:45 pm, when the fire was extinguished. Emergency responders remained on scene until 6 pm.
Chief Sam Deverell says the house was occupied, with the fire and smoke displacing the residents. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Shortly before 11:30 PM Wednesday night, CCFD responded to a structure fire in the 900 block of South Johnson Street, where heavy smoke was coming from an unattached garage. Firefighters immediately began a fire attack, with mutual aid again from the Floyd and Colwell fire departments.
Close to 25 firefighters battled the blaze until around 12:30 am Thursday (08.27), when the fire was extinguished and contained to the garage, which was unoccupied. Emergency responders remained on scene until about 1 am. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Also assisting in response to the fires were the Charles City Police Department, Charles City Water Department, Floyd County Emergency Management Agency, Floyd County Communications Center, Floyd County Search & Rescue, Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, AMR Ambulance, and MidAmerican Energy.
