A proclamation to allow farmers to haul heavier loads

Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a proclamation allowing farmers to haul heavier loads of grain, fertilizer, and manure on Iowa roads without permits.

The proclamation took effect as of September 10th, 2026 and runs through October 10th, 2026. It applies to vehicles carrying corn, soybeans, hay, straw, silage, stover, fertilizer, and manure. Farmers can exceed, without needing a permit, normal weight limits up to 90,000 pounds gross weight. The exemption covers all highways in Iowa except the interstate system. Trucks cannot exceed 90,000 pounds total weight and must stay within certain axle weight limits. Individual axles cannot exceed 20,000 pounds, and drivers must follow all posted limits on roads and bridges.
