Seed Sovereignty Initiative to Make Seed Traits More Responsive for Farmers

During a recent stop in Iowa, Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins announced a $180 million investment to launch the USDA’s Seed Sovereignty Initiative. Dr. Scott Hutchins, USDA Undersecretary for Research, Education, and Economics, was also in Iowa and said this is an effort to protect the genetic resources that underpin the nation’s food supply.

The goal is to optimize seed traits that provide the most benefit to U.S. farmers.

He said this investment will allow USDA and researchers to better understand and preserve the country’s most important crops and seeds.
