North Iowa Authorities Alert Motorists to Impacts of Sulfuric Acid Spill

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is advising motorists of a hazardous materials incident that occurred last Thursday (Oct. 8).
WCSO says the incident involved a commercial motor vehicle transporting sulfuric acid that experienced a release of the chemical onto the roadway near Highway 65 and 380th Street, about two miles north of Manly.
Sulfuric acid is a highly corrosive substance that can cause damage to vehicle paint, metal components, electrical systems, and other materials. Some damage may not be immediately visible.
WCSO advises anyone who traveled through the affected area Thursday, particularly between 4:30 and 5 PM, before law enforcement established traffic restrictions, should be aware of the possibility of vehicle exposure.
Motorists who believe their vehicles may have come into contact with the spilled material are encouraged to:
– Document the approximate time and location traveled through the area.
– Photograph and document any suspected vehicle damage.
– Contact their automobile insurance provider for guidance regarding possible exposure and claims.
– Inform any vehicle inspection or repair facility of the potential sulfuric acid exposure before work begins.
– Avoid direct contact with suspected chemical residue. Do not attempt to handle or neutralize the material without appropriate professional guidance.
WCSO says this information is provided as a precautionary public safety notification. Traveling through the area does not necessarily mean a vehicle was exposed to the chemical.
Questions regarding potential vehicle damage or insurance claims should be directed to the appropriate insurance providers.
