Application Deadline Friday (05.03) New Hampton Police Chief Post

The application deadline to apply for Police Chief for the City of New Hampton is currently set for Friday (05.03).

Former Chief Tim Pederson stepped down amid controversy over an off-duty incident which the City of New Hampton said his conduct did not meet expectations of the police chief’s position. Pederson resigned April 15th.

A petition has since been launched by Danielle Tiemessen to reinstate Pederson. Over 600 people have signed with a goal of 1,000 signatures, which she hopes to present to City officials.

Doug Eagan was then named interim police chief. However, last week, Eagan himself submitted his resignation, effective May 8th.

A statement from the City, issued Saturday (04.27), acknowledged that the City was aware Eagan was considering other employment opportunities in the near future.  While his resignation was sooner than anticipated, Mayor Steve Geerts noted, “Doug has served the New Hampton community for over 15 years, and we appreciate his service and sacrifices.”

The City statement adds, “While this situation has unexpectedly presented itself, we intend to take this opportunity to redefine the culture and leadership of the police department and look forward to working with the new police chief to redefine our police department.”

NHPD officer Chad McGee is expected to be named interim police chief after Eagan’s departure. The City hopes to have a new chief hired by June.

Applications for the police chief position are being accepted through 5 pm Friday (05.03) and are available on www.NewHamptonia.com

New Hampton Police Department Experiences Significant Changes

In recent weeks, the New Hampton Police Department has experienced a number of unanticipated changes.  As the search for a new police chief began this week, Interim Police Chief Doug Eagan submitted his resignation letter to Mayor Geerts effective May 8, 2024.

At the time of his appointment to interim chief of police, the City was aware Eagan was considering other employment opportunities in the near future.  While Eagan’s resignation was sooner than anticipated, Mayor Geerts commented “Doug has served the New Hampton community for over 15 years, and we appreciate his service and sacrifices.  Law enforcement is a difficult profession, and we certainly wish Doug the best in his future endeavors.”

In preparation for his departure, Mayor Geerts is preparing to appoint Officer Chad McGee as the interim chief of police while the hiring process for the police chief’s position is completed.  Officer McGee is capable and excited to fulfill this role to ensure the continuity of services to our community by the police department.

We have outlined an efficient and timely hiring process and hope to have a new chief of police on board in early June.  In the meantime, our current staff will continue to provide police services to our community.

As a city, we remain confident in the police department’s abilities.  While this situation has unexpectedly presented itself, we intend to take this opportunity to redefine the culture and leadership of the police department and look forward to working with the new police chief to redefine our police department.

New Hampton continues to be a great place to live, work and raise a family and we, as a city, are committed to maintaining these qualities which make New Hampton home for all of us.
