Chickasaw County To Appoint from Within Department for Next Sheriff

The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors will stay “in house” to appoint a new County Sheriff.

Current Sheriff Marty Hemann will retire later this month. Supervisors, along with Hemann, have interviewed two candidates for his possible successor. They included the County’s Chief Deputy Ryan Shawver and Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Sargent.

The Board has voted unanimously to appoint Shawver to take over, with his official appointment date of January 23rd. Heman officially retires on January 19th, but Shawver’s official appointment must wait until the 23rd because the “intent to appoint” notice must first be published in the County’s official newspapers at least 10 days prior to the appointment, which is January 12th in the New Hampton Tribune and January 13th in the Nashua Reporter.

Anyone in the county could still file a petition within 14 days of the January 23rd appointment to call for a special election to fill the post.

While Shawver won’t be officially appointed until the 23rd, he will still serve as the County Sheriff when Hemann’s retirement becomes official on the the 19th. By state code, the Chief Deputy is elevated to the role of Sheriff until a replacement is appointed or elected.
