Marlys Pogemiller, 96, Charles City

Marlys (Mrs. Dwight) Pogemiller, 96, a resident of 11th Street Chautauqua in Charles City died Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City with a prayer service following from 3:00-3:30p.m. A private family burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Marlys Elaine (Jans) Pogemiller was born September 23, 1926, at Morrison, Iowa, the daughter of John W. and Mary Ellen (Appel) Jans. She graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1944 and from Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) at Cedar Falls in 1948 with a B.A. degree in English and a minor in Speech, and later with certification in library science.

On June 11, 1948, she married Dwight Pogemiller and both taught at Janesville, Iowa. They lived 13 years at Janesville, 2 years at Centerville, Iowa, and since 1962 at Charles City. She studied several summers at U.N.I. to be certified in Library Science and served as Junior High Librarian in Charles City for 19 years and retired in 1985.

She was always active in the Methodist Church wherever they lived, serving as Sunday school teacher, youth counselor, and held offices in the church and in United Methodist Women. Her main interests were her family, church, writing poetry, reading, stitchery, YMCA, Hospice volunteering, and mentoring a child in “Just Friends”. She was also a life member of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association, CY Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Senior Citizens Center, the Citizens Heritage Club, and a life member of Floyd Co. Historical Society.

Living family members include three sons: Keith of Muscatine, Craig (Nancy) of Charles City, Garry (Debra) of Council Bluffs and one daughter, Nancy (Neal) Daley of Waukon. Six grandchildren include: Amy (Stephen) Taylor, Megan (Ben) Stineman, Lucas (Hannah) Pogemiller, Noah (Cassie) Daley, Erin (Kyle) Iverson, and Kristi (Mike) Bezousek. 16 great-grandchildren include: Myra, Ella, Leo, and Clay Stineman; Isabel, Will, and Guy Taylor; Ada and Emmett Iverson; Justin and Caleb Pogemiller; Peyton, Peige, and Preslie Daley; and Tobey and Gwendolyn Bezousek.

Marlys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dwight in 1997; three brothers: Vernon, Burdette, and Kenneth; and sister, Viola.

The family suggests memorials to a Hospice in Charles City, the Charles City Senior Citizens Center, the Charles City Middle School library, or the Our Brothers Keeper program.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
