Northeast Iowa Man Charged with Reckless Use of Firearm

A northeast Iowa man is facing a firearms charge after one person suffered minor injuries.

The Waukon Police Department says they responded to Veterans Memorial Hospital at about 10 pm Saturday night, March 4, where a gunshot victim was being treated. Their investigation led to the arrest of 44-year-old Demarkiss Hurst of Waukon on a charge of reckless use of a firearm – bodily injury, a Class D felony.

According to the criminal complaint, Hurst and the male victim claimed Hurst accidentally discharged his firearm in an apartment on 9th Street Southwest in Waukon. The victim’s injury included minor lesions to the inside of his left bicep and one to the side of his chest.  He signed a permission to search the residence and officers seized the firearm in question along with magazines and ammunition.

Police also say this is the second report of a firearm being discharged at the same apartment with a firearm owned by Hurst. They add that there was and is no concern for the public’s safety.

The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the investigation.
