“A Day To Remember” 1968 Tornado for Charles City Residents

The month of May 2023 marks the 55-year anniversary of the catastrophic tornado that ripped through Charles City on May 15, 1968.

In remembrance of that fateful day, some 15 or so people told their “tornado tales” earlier this month (05.15.23) during “A Day to Remember” at the Charles City Senior Center.

Bruce Eldridge was a high schooler getting ready for his new job as a french fry cook. His full intention was not to miss work, that is, until the twister changed his mind.

Dave Nehls was also in high school at the time and ventured out with his friend, Kevin Kelly, after the twister had left behind its path of destruction.

Several others who spoke recalled watching “Bart’s Clubhouse” when the news broke of the tornado striking Charles City, which is listed officially as 4:51 pm on May 15, 1968. 13 people lost their lives in the twister.
