Charles City, Floyd County Ready to Sign Ambulance Contract

Floyd County and the City of Charles City appear ready to sign a new contract with its private ambulance service provider.

With the current agreement with AMR Ambulance set to expire June 30th, the joint County/City ambulance commission met earlier this week to discuss the parameters for a new contract to start July 1st.

County Supervisor and ambulance commission chair, Jim Jorgensen, says the three-year contract calls for a subsidy payment to AMR of $415,000 for the first year, with a 3% increase in cost each of the following years. The agreement also comes with an opt out provision.

Jorgensen says that notice of termination by any party requires 30 days notice.

The City and County have split the subsidy to AMR evenly in recent years, including a combined $200,000 for the current fiscal year. Floyd County Medical Center has committed $100,000 to help in fiscal year 2023-24.

The City of Nashua also paid $10,000 to have AMR serve them until they could get their own ambulance service up and running. They may continue that arrangement because their service won’t be able to cover calls 24/7.

Jorgensen says Nashua, like the City and County, need to finalize their participation in the AMR agreement soon.

City Councils for Charles City and Nashua, plus the Floyd County Board of Supervisors are all scheduled for meetings next week and could make their final decisions then.

Jorgensen says the possibility of starting a County-run ambulance is still under consideration, but finalizing the AMR contract is the focus at this time.
