Clock Ticking for Homestead Tax Exemption for Homeowners 65 or Older

The clock is ticking for homeowners to claim an additional homestead exemption approved during this year’s state legislative session.

Chickasaw County Assessor Ray Armel says homeowners across the state who qualify for the additional homestead exemption must sign up by July 1st.

In Chickasaw County, Armel says they estimate about 750 homeowners are eligible to claim the additional homestead exemption. As of last Thursday, just over 300 claimants had registered.

Armel says he hopes to get everyone who is eligible to take advantage and adds that the exemption will be allowed for future years without future filing as long as the claimant continues to qualify.

Contact your County assessor’s office for an application form or for more information. Armel says the form is also available on the Chickasaw County website.
