City Council Approves Ordinance to Allow Driving Golf Cart on Charles City Streets

The Charles City City Council has approved an ordinance to allow golf carts to be driven on Charles City streets.
Stipulations of the golf cart ordinance will restrict travel to streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less and exclude Highway 18, Highway 14, and Gilbert Street, although golf carts can cross those roads. The ordinance will also require golf carts to display a bike safety flag and a slow moving vehicle sign.Â
Like UTVs, which have been allowed on City streets for over a year now, golf carts will not be allowed on the Charley Western Trail. Police Chief Hugh Anderson told the Council Monday (08.21) night, UTVs have presented few problems on the trail, although some mopeds and mini-bikes have been a more frequent issue.
With the passage of the golf cart ordinance, Councilman Patrick Lumley said it’s a good time to remind the public of the trail restriction.
City Attorney Brad Sloter laid out the fines associated with the simple misdemeanor offenses.
The golf cart ordinance will officially go into effect when it is published in the newspaper, expected to be this Friday (08.25).
