New Hampton Citizen Taxpayers to Share More Cost for New Water Treatment Plant
New Hampton officials met recently to continue discussions on the approach to replacing the City’s aging water treatment plant.
Mayor Bobby Schwickerath says citizen taxpayers are going to be counted on to help share more of the burden to pay for a new water treatment plant, with gradual increases in water and sewer rates.
To offset the rates residents have paid in recent years, Schwickerath says the City has gotten help from industries like Tri-Mark.
Schwickerath adds that the “can has been kicked down the road†long enough that “lost costs” continue to rise to keep the current plant operational.
The Iowa DNR has the given City until 2036 to have a new water treatment plant up and running. Estimates put the price tag at about $28 million.
