Former New Hampton Fire Chief Running for Mayor
A former New Hampton Fire Chief wants to become New Hampton’s Mayor.
Steve Geerts is one of two challengers running against incumbent Bobby Schwickerath, who is seeking his second term in office.Â
In addition to being Fire Chief for 24 years, Geerts also served eight years as a Chickasaw County Supervisor. He says he was encouraged to be a leader at an early age.
Geerts established Geerts Plumbing and Heating in New Hampton, owning and operating the business for over three decades before he sold it to his son 13 years ago.
Geerts says his budgeting experience with the fire department and the County will serve him well if he’s elected Mayor. He cites key issues being the building of a new water treatment plant and getting the New Hampton Police Department fully staffed.
Melanie Schmitt, a 15-year member of the New Hampton Board of Adjustment, has also tossed her hat in the ring to run against Schwickerath, who was elected Mayor in 2019 and took the office in January of 2020. His current term expires December 31, 2023.
