Floyd County Rural Law Enforcement Rates Going Up

Floyd County’s smaller communities will be paying more for law enforcement coverage.

The towns of Rudd, Rockford, Floyd, Colwell, and Marble Rock have 28E agreements with the County for the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office to provide law enforcement services. That service is currently assessed at a per capita rate of $4, a rate that hasn’t changed in several years.

Nora Springs has its own police department, but at present only consists of one officer, Chief Jesse Dugan. So, the City supplements law coverage with the Sheriff’s Office at a rate of $25 per deputy hour. That rate also hasn’t changed in years.

During a November Supervisors meeting, Sheriff Jeff Crooks explained the need to up those rates to keep up with the increased costs of providing that law enforcement.

At the Supervisors meeting Monday (12.04), Crooks said that the mayors of Rockford, Floyd, Marble Rock and Nora Springs have signed off on rate increases.

At the time of his update Monday, Crooks said he had not heard from Colwell or Rudd, but noted that, during the November discussion, the consensus of all mayors was that a rate increase is justified.

Supervisors unanimously approved the law enforcement rate increases for all six communities.
