New Hampton HS Football Coach Frerichs Stepping Down

In February, Scott Frerichs announced he would be stepping down as Activities Director at New Hampton High School.

At the time, he said he would continue as the Chickasaws head football coach, a position he’s held for the last 31 seasons. But it appears the 2023 team will be his final season at the helm.

The New Hampton School Board scheduled a special meeting Friday morning with an agenda that includes: resignation of varsity football coach. Sources say Frerichs notified players earlier in the week of his intention to step aside.

During the February 19th School Board meeting, it was revealed that Frerichs would step down as AD to go back into the classroom full-time, but continue as football coach. That plan has since changed.

In 2023, the Chickasaws football team went 4-6, but made it to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs after starting the season 0-4.

Frerichs’ overall record at New Hampton is 204 wins and 106 losses and includes the 1999 Class3A state title.

Cory McDonald, the New Hampton varsity baseball coach since 2009, was officially approved as the AD by the School Board in March. He will take over the AD post July 1st and continue as baseball coach.
