Charles City Housing Project Gets Almost $1.7 Million in Tax Credits

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) this week announced more than $43 million in awards to help transform 10 underutilized historic buildings, including one in Charles City.
That’s City Administrator Steve Diers informing the City Council Monday (12.02) night of the award that will aid in the conversion of the former Charles City Junior High School into 40 residential apartments, while the highly ornate auditorium will be left intact.
Debi Durham, director of IEDA and the Iowa Finance Authority, said of the projects award tax credits, “Historic buildings are tangible symbols of a community’s past, and repurposing these gems creates such character-rich spaces for new opportunities. In addition, these projects often serve as a catalyst for the redevelopment of a block, a street or a district.”
In July, Durham toured the former Charles City school with developer Shawn Foutch, who explained the building was in the best physical condition of any of a dozen similar conversion projects he’s been part of.
The total price tag for the renovation project is projected at about $7.6 million dollars.
