Mock Car Crash in Cresco Illustrates Dangers of Impaired, Distracted Driving

A handful of agencies participated in a mock car crash last week in Cresco.
The Cresco Police Department, along with the Iowa State Patrol, Cresco Community Fire Department, Howard County Emergency Management, EMS staff from Regional Health Services of Howard County, and Quam’s Auto Service brought the demonstration to Crestwood High School to educate students about the consequences of driving while impaired and distracted driving. The mock crash on Thursday (04.10) vividly and dramatically illustrated the horrific effects caused by impaired driving and came in advance of the high school prom on Saturday (04.12).
A Cresco Police Facebook post encouraged students to “make smart decisions during prom this weekend and any time you are behind the wheel.”
Iowa State Patrol also displayed a 2014 Chevy Camaro that was in a crash caused by excessive speed, with family members of those involved in the very tragic accident speaking during an assembly that followed in the High School auditorium.
A Howard County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post says the families represented Chloe Lucas and Kennedy Elskamp, who were passengers in the vehicle when they lost their lives due to excessive speed in a crash near Dubuque on July 1, 2022.
Pictures of the mock crash exercise were also included in the Facebook posts with caution that, “Viewer discretion is advised. All the events in these photos are dramatized for educational purposes. View at your own discretion.”
