It’s National Police Memorial Week, which included National Police Officers Memorial Day, every year on May 15th.
Charles City Police Chief Hugh Anderson says those who have fallen in the line of duty are memorialized with a national monument in Washington.
One of those to fall locally was memorialized with a bench dedication in Plainfield last Saturday (05.10). William Meadows was the town marshal who was killed on duty in January 1961.
Meadows murder remains a cold case, with the perpetrators of the crime still unknown over 60 years later.
One of the most recent police officers killed in the line of duty was Algona Police officer Kevin Cram, who died in September 2023 after he was shot attempting to serve an arrest warrant. Cram was also a member of the Nora Springs Police Department from 2013 to 2015.
