City of New Hampton Hosts Public Hearing Monday (05.19) on Water, Sewer Rate Increases

The Iowa DNR has mandated that the City of New Hampton replace its current wastewater treatment plant by the year 2036.
The City has been targeting construction of a new plant to begin in 2027 and be operational by 2029. Mayor Steve Geerts says they want to beat the DNR deadline sooner rather than later.
Current estimates put the cost of a new plant around $30 million. To help pay for it, the City will need to up water and sewer rates for both residential and commercial use.
Before the City takes action on any rate increases, the City Council will hold a public hearing Monday (05.19) night on an ordinance to amend sewer and water rates and infrastructure maintenance and operation fees.
Citizens weigh in during the public hearing as part of the Council’s regular meeting starting at 7 pm in City Hall.
