Woman Dies After ATV Hits Deer in Northeast Iowa

A female passenger was killed after the ATV she was riding struck a deer in northeast Iowa at the onset of the Memorial Day weekend.

The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) says they received a report of a single-vehicle wreck about 9 pm Friday (05.23) night at the intersection of Paint Creek Drive and Ness Ridge Road near Waterville. 33-year-old Jason Matthias of Cedar Falls was driving a Can-Am Maverick south on Paint Creek Drive when it hit the deer. Matthias then lost control of the ATV,  which struck an embankment and rolled on its side.

A passenger, 33-year old Heather Lynn Jones of Raymond was pinned under the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Matthias was treated for injuries at the crash site.

Also responding with assistance was Waterville Fire and Rescue and Veterans Memorial Hospital.

ACSO says the accident remains under investigation.
