In this month’s Mayor Monday on Community Conversations, Charles City Mayor Dean Andrews shares exciting updates on key city developments. The search for a new city administrator is underway following Steve Diers’ departure, with consultants from Hinson Consulting conducting a nationwide search to find the perfect fit for Charles City. Meanwhile, the City Hall and police department renovation faces challenges due to unexpected sandy fill, requiring additional footings and an $82,000 cost covered by contingency funds. The Main Street Bridge, recently inspected, awaits a detailed report by July or August to guide future maintenance plans. On the housing front, the Collective on Thirteenth (a 40-unit apartment complex) and Union Place (duplexes and multi-unit rentals by Kaden Properties) are addressing the city’s housing needs, with construction underway and tax credit applications pending. Plus, a dedication for the new Sportsman’s Park Inclusive playground is planned for this summer.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City, which basically means he’s been corn‑fed and radio‑bred since day one. As a kid, he was always caught singing along to the radio — and while he’ll tell you he’s great at karaoke, let’s just say the audience’s ears often file a noise complaint. When he’s not busy butchering ‘80s power ballads, Chris enjoys starting overly ambitious home projects that rarely make it past the “great idea” stage. He lives in Charles City with his endlessly patient wife Vicki and their kids, Brynlee and Jaxon, who have already perfected the art of the eye‑roll every time Dad cracks another “dad joke.”
