Foster Grandparents in Charles City Dodges Initial DOGE Cuts

The Foster Grandparents Program (FGP) in Charles City has survived the latest DOGE cuts, but the program’s future is still on shaky ground.
A division of AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors, program director Jennifer Lantz says FGP is fortunate to survive with new federal funding starting July 1st, but others weren’t as lucky.
However, Lantz says their long term outlook remains a bit hazy.
Lantz says they hope to hear on the second budget phase soon, but in the meantime, she encourages those in favor of FGP’s continued funding to contact your U.S. representatives and senators, as well voicing your support of Foster Grandparents, voicesfornationalservice.org.
Lantz says the program’s survival is vital for kids and grandparents alike.
For now, Lantz says FGP will continue in Charles City, along with service in Cerro Gordo, Mitchell and Chickasaw counties.
FGP has been in Charles City for 35 years, in North Iowa for 53 years, and just celebrated 60 years for the program nationally in May.
