CCADC Ready to Help Workers Being Displaced by Winnebago Closure in Charles City
The Charles City Area Development Corporation (CCADC) is making itself available to workers who will be displaced by the eventual shutdown of the Winnebago plant in Charles City.
A statement by the CCADC notes, “A chapter in Charles City history is ending with Winnebago Industries closure of its Hardwoods Division. Winnebago has been a primary Charles City employer since 1998.”
At the height of operations in 2008, Winnebago employed over 600 Charles City workers. However, last week, the company announced that 18 people would be laid off on September 8th, along with 77 workers at its facility in Waverly.
The Charles City plant will fully close on December 12th with another 26 employees to lose their jobs. In May, 20 workers in Charles City were laid off by Winnebago.
The CCADC says, “We desire to first concentrate upon the human element. We feel for the workers and the families of those being discharged. However, we strive to coordinate operations with the Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) Rapid Response team.”
The initiative seeks to assist Iowans impacted by layoffs, including resume assistance, interview preparation, hiring events, and unemployment assistance. Displaced workers may also use the services of the CCADC in devising reemployment strategies.
The CCADC adds that, beyond the immediacy of this closure, the community and Winnebago will have a 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility to market.
