Campaign Committee Begins Push for Bond Referendum to Improve Charles City High School

The Charles City School District will put a bond referendum before voters this fall to fund up to $30 million in renovations, upgrades and improvements to Charles City High School.
To promote the measure, a Bond Referendum Campaign Committee met for the first time last Wednesday (07.09) night. The group includes former Charles City Ag-Ed teacher Jim Lundberg, who retired two years ago after joining the High School staff in 1983.
The current high school building was built 65 years ago. Teacher and Comets varsity football coach Brian Bjorklund, also on the Campaign Committee, commends staff for holding things together over the years.
An almost $28 million bond referendum failed in November 2023, which Superintendent Brian Burnight says feedback indicates a new performing arts auditorium was a factor in the measure’s defeat. Thus, any new such facility will be pushed to Phase 2 of the current project being proposed.
Burnight says about 50 people attended the Bond Referendum Campaign kickoff meeting and knows many others are eager to help in getting the bond passed this fall.
He says the next step is securing the petition signatures needed to get the measure on the ballot November 4th.
Passage of the bond will require a 60% supermajority YES vote.
