Northeast Iowa Residents Put on Safety Alert During Law Enforcement Operation
A law enforcement operation in northeast Iowa Monday (09.08) afternoon put some residents on high alert.
Shortly before 3 pm Monday, the City of Independence issued a public safety alert that the City’s police department was on the scene assisting the U.S. Marshals Service and the Iowa State Patrol in an operation related to a federal warrant. The impacted perimeter for the operation was from 9th Avenue Southwest to 7th Avenue Southwest and from 5th Street Southwest to 3rd Street Southwest.
The City added that, for their safety and the safety of law enforcement partners, all residents and vehicle traffic were instructed to avoid the entire area until the operation is complete. Residents within the specific perimeter were also advised to shelter in place, stay inside their homes, and keep away from doors and windows.
A City Facebook post said, “This is a coordinated and controlled operation. We are issuing this alert to ensure the community remains clear of the area while these agencies conduct their work.”
Due to the proximity of the operation, Independence elementary schools were on secure status out of an abundance of caution and advised there was no danger to students. Schools dismissed as scheduled.
About 6 pm Monday night, the City issued an “All Clear” notification and thanked residents for their cooperation, patience and adherence to safety directives essential for the successful and safe resolution of this situation.
The City also extended gratitude to the U.S. Marshals Service and the Iowa State Patrol for their professionalism in conducting this operation and to the Independence Police Department for providing critical support to ensure the safety of the community during this event.
