NEIA Massage Therapist Who Stole Patients Pain Meds Surrenders License, Arrested for Assault

A northeast Iowa massage therapist, who surrendered her license for stealing medications from hospice patients, was recently arrested on an assault charge.

According to an Iowa Capital Dispatch report, state records indicate that in October 2013, Mackenzie McCarroll, now 32-years-old, was awarded an Iowa massage therapy license and subsequently began practicing in Cresco.

In July 2022 and in January 2024, the Board of Massage Therapy fielded complaints that McCarroll was working at Regional Health Services of Howard County when four hospice clients reported missing morphine medication.

The board’s investigation revealed McCarroll admitted to the theft of morphine from at least one of the clients. In November 2022, she was placed on the state’s dependent adult abuse registry as a result of the alleged thefts.

The investigation also revealed McCarroll underwent treatment for a substance use disorder and other mental health conditions in May 2023 and January 2024. She was also involuntarily committed for prior substance abuse issues, which she failed to report to the board.

The board also recently charged McCarroll with habitual intoxication or addiction to the use of drugs, obtaining or possessing controlled substances without lawful authority, and failure to notify the board of a criminal conviction, with court records showing McCarroll was convicted of OWI in Bremer County in November 2024.

In order to resolve the case w3ith the Board of Massage Therapy, McCarroll agreed to surrender her license.

Court records also show that, on September 12th, Cresco Police arrested McCarroll on charges of domestic abuse assault, disorderly conduct and obstruction of emergency communications after she was accused of assaulting another woman, who claimed McCarroll also threatened to cause a car crash in which they “both would die.”

CPD also alleges that McCarroll started to disrobe in front of officers  and repeatedly yelled “*** You!!!” at the victim after she was placed in a squad car.

She is scheduled for arraignment on those charges October 13th in Howard County District Court.
