New City Administrator to Start December 1st in Charles City

A north Iowa native is set to become the next city administrator for the City of Charles City.

The City received 14 applications to replace former City Administrator Steve Diers, who left Charles City to take the same position with the City of Clear Lake. After a four-month hiring process, Tyler Trout, currently the city administrator in Avoca, Iowa, was approved by the City Council last week.

That’s Mayor Dean Andrews, who adds that Trout, a 2014 graduate of Mason City High School, will bring his handlebar mustache and his energy to Charles City.

The City had hoped to have the new city administrator to start by mid-November, but Andrews says Trout will take over December 1st, though he’s expected to get acquainted with City business in the meantime.

Andrews also notes that Trout has been active in the League of Cities, giving him more opportunities to network with other city administrators and city managers from across the state.

Until Trout starts in Charles City, former Spencer City Administrator Dan Gifford will continue as interim city administrator. Gifford came out of retirement to work for the the City, but had no interest in the position full-time.
