City of Charles City Gets Over $550,000 in Back PPP Water Bills, Over $30K for Main Street

What seemed improbable when Pure Prairie Poultry (PPP) shut down in October 2024 has become over a half-million dollar reality for the City of Charles City.

When the chicken processing plant closed, there was an outstanding utility bill of $625,000, mostly for water and sewer charges. During last Wednesday (01.21) night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Dean Andrews noted the City tried to collect payment while the facility was still operating.

Councilman Patrick Lumley added.

The Council then passed a resolution to accept a settlement payment of $554,000 for those back utilities.

The Council also approved a resolution to accept payment of $34,000 to convey a municipal quit claim deed that City Attorney Brad Sloter said will transfer ownership of the former section of North Main Street to the east of PPP to CBT Real Estate Holdings.

Councilman Phillip Knighten said the move makes sense.

When the Council approved seeking the utility bill settlement and the final payment to give up Main Street back in September, it was with the understanding it might help facilitate the sale of PPP to potential new investors and operators.
