Overnight Road Closure in Lansing This Week for Mississippi River Bridge Construction

Activity related to the construction of the new Mississippi River bridge at Lansing will cause travel disruption for overnight motorists later this week.

The Iowa DOT says construction crews will temporarily close Iowa 9/Iowa 26 in Lansing, also known as Great River Road, between Henry and Hale streets, starting at 10 pm Thursday (02.19) night until 6 am Friday (02.20) morning, weather permitting. The closure will allow the contractor to move a crane into position to help with the removal of the old bridge.

If needed, the backup date and time would be from 10 pm this Friday night until 6 am Saturday (02.21) morning.

Meanwhile, most of the old Mississippi River bridge at Lansing, imploded in December, has been cleaned up. Pete Hjelmstad with the Mason City DOT says clearing debris from the river has been aided by sonar technology.

The DOT also notes that the alley under the Lansing bridge and Front Street will remain closed to allow for construction of the new bridge. You will need to find an alternate route during these road closures.

The Car Ferry to transport commuters back and forth across the river between Lansing and Wisconsin is also back in operation. The ferry broke down last Wednesday (02.11) and was expected to be out of service until Friday (02.13), but repairs were made sooner, with ferry up and running again on Thursday (02.12).

Officials also note a new setup for the car ferry, with concrete barriers added to make parking more organized in preparation for the busy marina season. The goal is to keep things running smoothly while minimizing disruption for marina and Tikki Bar visitors.

Additional signage will be installed to guide ferry users.
