Road Construction Near New Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing, Bridge Taking Shape of Bridge

While construction of the new Mississippi River bridge at Lansing continues, some nearby road construction is set to begin Monday (03.23).
The Iowa DOT’s District 2 Office says they will be widening lanes and building a new intersection for Iowa 9/Iowa 26 near the entrance to the new bridge. The project will shift traffic to a single lane, with crews setting up temporary traffic lights, and placing concrete barriers along the center of the roads.
Work will start in the northbound lane, then switch to the southbound lane. Traffic will initially be controlled with orange cones and flaggers during work hours. In a couple weeks, traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic lights and concrete barriers. Vehicle height will be restricted to 15 feet and vehicle width to 9 feet.
The DOT also advises that, during the projects, access to Hale, Henry, and Gray Streets will be closed until the northbound pavement is complete. Front Street will be reopening to traffic before access to the west end of Henry Street is closed. The full reconstruction, with single lane-traffic, will be in place through this fall.
As for construction of the new bridge, Pete Hjelmstad with the DOT in Mason City says the structure continues to extend further over the river.
He adds that it was a long time coming for the bridge deck to become more visible.
Hjelmstad says construction of the new bridge is still on target for a Spring 2027 completion.
