Severe Storms Possible Monday Afternoon and Evening

A round of potentially severe thunderstorms is expected to move into parts of the Upper Midwest on Monday, with the greatest risk developing during the late afternoon and evening hours.

According to the latest forecast, storms are expected to develop and intensify between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the highest threat generally south of Interstate 90. However, the exact placement of the most severe weather will depend on how much the atmosphere can warm and destabilize during the day.

Forecasters say several hazards will be possible with any storms that become severe. The primary concerns include damaging wind gusts, which could exceed 60 to 70 mph, and large hail, potentially reaching up to 2 inches in diameter. There is also a conditional risk for tornadoes, particularly if enough daytime heating occurs to increase instability. In addition, storms may produce locally heavy rainfall, which could lead to minor flooding in isolated areas.

Rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 1.5 inches across much of the region, with some locations possibly receiving more than 2 inches if storms repeatedly move over the same areas.

Forecast confidence varies depending on storm development. Meteorologists note that morning cloud cover or lingering rain could limit instability, reducing the severity of storms later in the day. On the other hand, if skies clear and temperatures rise, the risk for more intense storms—including tornadoes—would increase.

The timing of the storms could also impact evening plans, including after-school activities, as the severe threat is expected to ramp up during the late afternoon.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware, monitor forecasts throughout the day, and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings. Having a safety plan in place and knowing where to seek shelter quickly can be critical if severe weather develops.
