One Driver Killed in Weekend Head-On Collision in Northeast Iowa

A head-on collision in Northeast Iowa Sunday (06.21) night has left one person dead and another seriously injured.

The Iowa State Patrol (ISP) says the wreck occurred at about 7:30 PM on Highway 20, near the exit to highways 58 and 27.  An initial investigation determined that two vehicles crashed into each other a mile before the exit.

The ISP crash report says a Nissan Rogue driven by 50-year-old Tracey Leytem of Cedar Rapids was eastbound on Highway 20 and crossed the center line for unknown reasons, striking the westbound Chevy Equinox, driven by 23-year-old Abby Hamann of Grundy Center, head on.

Leytem was transported with serious injuries by Covenant Ambulance to MercyOne Northeast Iowa in Waterloo, where she later died. 

Hamann was initially taken by Sartori Ambulance to Mercy hospital and later flown to UI Health Care Medical Center in Iowa City. Her condition is unknown.

The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, along with Waterloo and Cedar Falls police assisted with the wreck, which remains under investigation.
