Dorothy “Dottie” Solberg, 103, Charles City

Dorothy “Dottie” Solberg, 103, of Charles City, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home with Eric Hoefer from Messiah Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment will take place at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City with a rose laying ceremony.

Visitation will take place one hour before the service at the funeral home on Friday.

Dorothy Mae (King) Solberg, the daughter of Clark Leonard and Ruth Amelia (Beyers) King, was born March 21, 1923, in Marble Rock. She received her education at Floyd County rural schools through 9th grade and one year at Marble Rock High School. She then worked on the family farm and later worked for Frontier Club and Club 218 in Charles City. She also helped her sister with raising her three boys. Dorothy met her husband Ervin at the Canton Café. On September 27th, 1953, she was united in marriage to Ervin Solberg at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage. They farmed in rural Floyd until Ervin’s retirement.

Dorothy’s interests included playing bingo, visiting with friends, and watching sports with her husband and family. She was a HUGE fan of the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Iowa State Cyclones. She also enjoyed playing pool, and cooking for her family, especially her homemade noodles, banana cake, cherry cheesecake, and oatmeal cookies. Dorothy loved to travel.  She and Ervin, along with their brother and sister-in-law attended many baseball games and toured the Arch in St. Louis, Missouri. She and her sister, Minerva, went on several trips to Las Vegas and bus trips to North Carolina. Her lasts trips were with Ervin to California and Lake Tahoe while visiting family.

Living family members include her sons and daughters: Michael (Mary) Solberg, Susan Helmer, Thomas (Pam) Solberg, Linda Couillard, Janet Solberg, and Diane (Tom) Houdek; 7 grandchildren: Jessica Meka, Britanie (Josh) Summer, Cody Helmer, Jacie (Tristyn) Lee, Chris Upenieks, and Larissa Peverill (fiancé Daniel Oleson); 12 great-grandchildren: and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ervin; grandson, Thomas John “TJ” Houdek; great-grandson in infancy; sisters: Katherine Davis, Minerva Dralle, and Geraldine Vater; brothers: George King, Leonard King, and Carroll King; and sisters and brothers-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the TJ Houdek Scholarship Fund at First Security Bank.
