North Iowa Man Gets Probation for Embezzling High School Trap Team Funds

A Mason City man will be on probation for the next half-decade for embezzling money from a high school trapshooting program.

Following an investigation by Mason City Police, 42-year-old Dion Cody was arrested in February on a charge of first-degree theft, a Class C felony, after he was accused of embezzling over $10,000 from the Mason City Mohawk Trap Team between April 2021 and August 2025. Prosecutors say Cody used his “exclusive control” over team finances to commit “numerous non-team-related purchases, ATM withdrawals, and other payments unrelated to team operations.”

In May, Cody pleaded guilty in Cerro Gordo County District Court to second-degree theft, a Class D felony.  On Monday (07.06),  he was sentenced to five years of supervised probation and must pay a $1,025 fine. 

Cody must also successfully complete all recommended drug and mental health treatment and submit to alcohol or drug testing as directed by the Department of Correctional Services.
