Butler, Black Hawk Counties to Receive Almost $50 Million to Facilitate Bridge Repairs

Communities across Iowa will receive more than $71 million in federal funding to replace bridges and improve highway safety, including bridges in North Iowa.

That’s U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, who says he voted for the funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation because Iowa has too many bridges and roadways in need of repair.

Butler County will lead a $24 million project to replace seven bridge structures across Boone, Butler, Clinton, Humboldt, Jackson, Lucas and Sioux Counties. Funding will support the construction phase of the projects.

Another $24 million will fund the Avenue of the Saints Rural Safety and Freight Mobility Project in Black Hawk County, in which the Iowa DOT will convert the current at-grade signalized intersection at Iowa Highway 58 and Greenhill Road into a “double-teardrop” roundabout interchange, with Iowa Highway 58 passing under Greenhill Road. The project also includes ADA-compliant crosswalks with rectangular rapid flashing beacons, lighting, noise barriers and reconstructed stormwater and detention infrastructure.

Iowa City will receive $23.5 million to replace two aging Iowa River crossings on Highway 1 with a single multimodal bridge. The project includes associated intersection, roadway and active transportation upgrades.
