Speed Limits on Iowa Two-Lane Paved Roads Can Vary Under New 60 MPH Law

It’s been just over a month since a new state law upped speed limits on many Iowa two-lane paved roads for 55 mph up to 60 mph.

The Iowa DOT’s Pete Hjelmstad says various factors come into play when deciding whether an increase in speed is justified.

Counties also have some discretion to determine as to which roads they could lower the speed limit. 

Floyd County Engineer Adam Miller recently lobbied the Board of Supervisors to set the speed limit for a section of Rotary Park Road, between Charles City and Floyd, at 45 mph.

Supervisor Gloria Carr asked Miller if the new speed limit, which went into effect July 1st, applies to gravel roads.

Signage has been placed on all two-lane paved roads in Floyd County that made the jump from 55 to 60 mph.
