Farmers Push for Fertilizer Pricing Investigation

Iowa corn farmers are wanting greater oversight of the fertilizer industry as concerns grow over rising fertilizer costs and increased market consolidation.

Farmers conveyed their experiences with rapidly increasing fertilizer expenses, describing how higher input costs continue to inject financial pressure on farming businesses. According to growers, fertilizer prices in some cases doubled within a year, making it more troublesome to manage production costs and maintain profitability. 

During a recent meeting, farmer representatives from across Iowa met with Stanley E. Woodward Jr., Associate Attorney General of the United States, Department of Justice (DOJ), to converse about challenges affecting agricultural operations. A major concern discussed during the meeting was the consolidation of the fertilizer industry. Farmers argued that fewer companies possessing a larger share of the market may be limiting competition and contributing to higher prices. They articulated worries that the market conditions are placing family farms at a disadvantage and making it difficult for producers to remain financially sustainable.

The meeting provided farmers with a gateway to directly communicate their concerns to federal officials and seek accountability regarding fertilizer market dynamics.
