Tomato Care Guidance

Home gardeners in Iowa are finding a range of tomato issues this summer. The most common problems are physiological disorders triggered by fluctuating weather, uneven moisture and environmental stress.
One of the most recognized complaints this season has been blossom end rot. Heavy summer rains have also led to widespread fruit cracking. Cracks normally form near the stem and may radiate outward or circle the fruit stem. Periods of intense heat and strong sunlight have also led to sunscald in some gardens. Many gardeners noticed flowers dropping from plants earlier this season without the production of tomatoes. Despite the variety of symptoms appearing this season, many of the solutions are the same and the takeaway is simple, consistency is key.
Consistent watering, mulching, balanced fertilization, good air circulation and proper training all help reduce stress-related disorders.
